Re: [SPAM]Re: [SPAM][SCPD] Re: John Adams

We stayed at the Quality Inn - total including tax was $ 91.19 a night. Nothing fancy, but clean and right next to the tour bus station and National Cemetery. There is a "Friendlys Restaurant" across the street which has the best clam chowder and fried clams!! Also great hot fudge sundaes (theymake their own ice cream.) I would recommend at least three days so that you have a chance to also seethe Eisenhower farm and the town itself which has been lovingly maintained(it was right in the middle of the battle and you can still see the pock marks left from the canons and bullets.) I really fell in love with the place - it is absolutely fascinating. You know how you have a mental picture of something or someplace and then when you get there it does not quite meet your expectations? Gettysburg is one of the few times in my life that myexpectations were exceeded!! It was eerie to think of all the blood that was spilled there almost 150 years ago. 170,000 soldiers fought in the three day battle. Sometimes it was brother against brother. The area (strangely) is beautiful. You can Google Gettysburg and look at some of the home videos people have taken. The battlefields are now covered with monuments, canons, etc. We visited the big museum (there are many little ones) as well as the National Cemetery. You can walkalong the rows and rows of plaques in the ground - a name, a name, unknown, unknown, a name - so many unknowns. There are even mass graves. I stoodin the same place Abraham Lincoln stood when he gave his famous address - a very emotional experience. I was raised in upstate New York (Little Falls) which was right in the middle of the battlefields of the Revolutionary War. We were taught about that from Kindergarten on, but I did not know that much about the Civil War. I fully intend to rectify that! We have such a wonderful country. I plan to buy it when it comes out on DVD so I can share it with my family. What a terrific look at life in the late 18th century and the building of a democratic government. I highly recommend it for viewing. Barbara Johnson --- In OH2NY2CA wrote: > > This is an excellent show!
