RE: [AmayaEMB] Needing Web Site Developer/Host Suggestions
Planning out what the site should look like is good. Go to other people's sites and look at things you like and write them down. Even if they are in very different industries, note the things, colors, buttons etc. You will see many common things you like and you will find many of those features are standard in today's e-comm packages. Also, forget all the late-night commercials that say they are making $1000s per day as soon as they opened the website (maybe one in 10,000 sites has that kind of success and it is certainly not in embroidery.) It has taken us 12 days to become an overnight success and we have out survived 98% of all websites on the Internet. Sales will be slow and you will have to promote your site against very large, very well funded companies. That being said, no small company should be without a website. We sell mostly first aid and medical products. We are now in Virginia for the last 7 years. 45 invoices per year in this State and 3,000 in the other 49 states per year. We don't rely on local business, but 98% of our customers find us on the Internet. It just takes time. You can attach your domain to a free apparel site (see Sanmar, Atlantic coast cotton or alpha and get an account.) The site will have your name and phone on it even if it can't take orders online.) Sign the domain up for every free listing you can. May be spend 29.95 to have a company submit it to hundred of small search engines (once a year) Since it takes 2 week to 6 months to get listed with these sites you have time to make the site better and better and/or to switch it over to a full e-comm site while the domain is still building traffic. When the site's ecomm is working, then list with Goggle and Yahoo so the site looks it's best when they look at it and this will help you rate higher. Since it takes time for people to find your site and get interested enough to call or shop for pricing you are still not out of pocket too much yet. Don't ever worry that when you announce your opening that someone will desperately need you to make 200 shirts the first week. It just does not happen, but you can start your marketing long before the first prospect arrives. Don't beleave any company that says it will build traffic in days - they are eight crooks, amateurs or the good ones will need to charge to $10s of thousands per month to pull that off. And all this still may have only cost you $8 while you are writing that business plan. Hopes this helps, Steve Hull Co-Founder Crisis Management Systems Inc. I still have to procure vendors for the items I want to have available for customers, and several other important steps in the business plan, but I will certainly nab a domain name, so it doesn't get taken. That's the least I can do. Next is to flesh out the web site, and I can fill in the details as I get them. I know I can publish the site to the 'net when I'm ready. You can get a domain, a website with shopping cart for your items and shop in less than 10 minutes, they are just amazing. The simplest shopping site will cost about $150 per year, not per month. They also set up the site very fast. At $39/ per month the price is great, but more importantly your website company has to be rock solid. You can find free websites but no or little support getting something fixed or set up. Yes, building a site is easy once you learn it all from scratch. (we built all of ours from 1995 until 2005) But yes you will spend about 200-400 hours for your first one. But there are now many great templates that you can use to make a very professional looking website and also remember that you will need to put in most of your own pictures and this also takes a lot of your time to get. Using a pre-made package from a good company these days will most often give to very good results with the least headache. Once a year look around and see if the company is still a good fit. You will probably rebuild it every two years to help it stay fresh and update prices and design 1-2 hours per week.
