File - Safety Guidelines

FREECYCLE SAFELY! Although the vast majority of the people you meet in the Freecycle group are wonderful, giving people, there are probably a few who are looking for ways to take advantage of others. It's essential that you take reasonable steps to protect your safety. Please consider these hints: WHEN POSTING TO THE GROUP •Do not use a screen name or shop address that includes your last name. It may be paired with other identifying information in your post to locate your phone number or address. •Please do not use an automated "signature line" that includes identifying information, even from work. •Do not give your phone number or address in your post to the group. Exchange that information as necessary with individual members via shop. Even then, it's best to give your cell phone number, if possible. •Do not be too specific about your meeting place/time in your group post. Share that just with the other individual involved. •Think carefully before revealing any personal information such as age, marital status, financial information, or information that may target you as being vulnerable, such as the fact that you are disabled and live alone, or that your husband is out of town. •Do not provide too much information that may appeal to a burglar, such as the reason you are offering an old stereo is because you just got a brand-spanking new one, or that you'll be away from home on vacation next week. Of course if anyone ever does contact you please let the know. WHEN MEETING IN PERSON OK, so, you've posted an offer, and now you're ready to make arrangements with a Freecycler to pass the item on. How can you do it safely? •Consider meeting in a public place. Make sure you have some way of identifying each other (car •Don't announce to the group where you'll be meeting someone. There was a situation in another city where a Freecycler had arranged to pass some items to another Freecycler at a public place. She went up to a lady standing by a car in the spot they were to meet, and said, "Are you Harriet?" The woman said, "yes", and the member gave her the item. After the woman drove off, the *real* Harriet showed up. •If meeting at your home, either make sure you have someone else at home with you, or put the item outside for pick up. When you are picking up something from someone else, there are a few things to consider as well. You may want to suggest a public meeting place, but the person making the offer may prefer that you pick it up at their home. If so, it's best if you take someone with you. If going alone, let someone else know where you'll be, who you are meeting, and when you expect to return. Do not go inside the other person's home alone. CHECK YOUR STUFF BEFORE GIVING IT AWAY •Check pockets on clothing being given away. You might find a credit card receipt or a deposit slip (or, if you're lucky, a $10 bill, LOL). •return name tags/labels. •Check purses, briefcases, and luggage.
