Dear Freecycle(TM) Member, Thanks for being a part of The Freecycle Network. We're changing the world one gift at a time! This message is sent to all Purchase onliners upon pending membership, and periodically thereafter to the entire list. We ask that you post FIRST on the Clark County board if you are a resident of Indiana before posting on other Freecycle Boards. Please try and wait at least 24 hours before posting the item on another board or selecting a recipient to give all OUR members at least a chance to respond. :-) Now for the rules: FREECYCLE RULES & ETIQUETTE NO CROSSPOSTING IS ALLOWED. If you are reported to be posting "wants" or "offers" at another group, you will receive a warning. If it happens again, you will be returnd from the group. Effective November 12, 2006. YOU MAY JOIN OTHER GROUPS AND RESPOND TO OFFERS AT THEIR SITE. HOWEVER, if one of our members reports you for posting to another group, you will be returnd from this local group after the second offense. REMEMBER, you may only post offers or wants at one group at a time per day. RESELLING: Reselling is allowed. The only exception is if you, the offerer, do not want the item resold, you must state this to anyone who responds. If that person is found to have resold your item, they will be returnd. 1) KEEP IT FREE, LEGAL & APPROPRIATE FOR ALL AGES. This means, for example, no Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms or Drugs, legal or otherwise. Two strikes and you're outta the group. This is our main rule on Freecycle to live by and it's a pretty easy one at that. FREE means just that "FREE" -- NO TRADING, NO POSTAGE, NO SHIPPING FEES! 2) IN THE SPIRIT OF GIFTING, your FIRST posting must be an OFFER.You may be returnd from the group without warning if you do not post an offer within 14 days from joining. 3) SUBJECT LINE OF YOUR POSTS. Use these phrases to make it easy for others to view: OFFER: loveseat, city. [Offering more than 1 thing? Try to keep keep it all in 1 shop] TAKEN: loveseat [posted by person who posted the OFFER] WANT: loveseat, any condition. [Please use this sparingly and don't offer to sell or trade something for it. And above all else, don't ask for extravagant items like cars, hottubs,washers and dryers, big ticket items. Watch the board for those items. If people have them, they will offer them. If you do post for a housefull of items or big ticket items, the strike rule will kick in - see #1 above.] RECEIVED: loveseat [posted by person who posted the WANTED] ADMIN: To be used by moderators only. 4) Please feel free to post a photo of your offer in the photo section. 5) **PLEASE DO NOT POST THE SAME "WANT" POSTING MORE THAN ONCE A MONTH.** Keep your "WANTs" to reasonable requests and only (2) postings per week per member. Asking for a "laundry list" of items is not allowed EXCEPT for approved charities. (Updated 1-1-07) Also, if you post a WANT and do NOT include a location, you ASSUME ALL RESPONSIBILITY FOR PICKING UP THE ITEM. Do not request a member to meet you halfway or deliver it to you. 6) NO POLITICS, NO SPAM, NO MONEY, NO RELIGION, NO OF ITEMS WANTED FOR PERSONAL REASONS, NO PERSONAL Two strikes & you're out, i.e. you will be Purchased by the moderator after two inappropriate postings. NOTE: You can ask for Lists of items wanted if you are an approved charity. No others will be allowed. NO EXCEPTIONS. 7) YOUR APPROXIMATE LOCATION: Try to list this in the body of your shopping as well as in the subject line. I've got a couch and live downtown. Nearest intersection: Speedway and Stone. DO NOT put your phone number, work number, home address or work address in the post. THIS IS FOR YOUR SAFETY. You can do so in a response, but for your OWN SAFETY, do not make this information public on the board. 8) REPORT any harassing shops, offers to sell you something you wanted, NO SHOWS or any other concerns to the moderators. 9) CAN WE USE FREECYCLE TO FIND NEW HOMES FOR PETS? Yes, keep it legal & be lovingly careful. Please visit to look up other pet-related resources in the area, and read the PET POLICY located in the files section for helpful suggestions. YOU MAY NOT ASK FOR A PET! 10) RESPONSES GO ONLY TO OFFERER. It keeps down the sheer number of shoppings. 11) PICK UP. Arrange as you like. Generally, you'll wait until you get a handful of responses or maybe overnight, and then you can pick whomever you like! That's half the fun. Arrange pickup with one person only,rather than "it's on the porch, whoever gets here first gets it. Otherwise you'll become the bad man pretty fast with your fellow Freecycle Group Members... Also: only give your phone number to one person at a time or ask for the recipient's phone no. Otherwise you'll get swamped with phone calls. 12) NO USING FREECYCLE TO RECYCLE YOURSELF OR YOUR CHILDREN. Recycling oneself (or one's shy friends) is, I'm afraid, not allowed.There are many fine Internet dating sites better suited to this purpose, or you could try Craig's List or a Burning Man mixer (just kidding). Recycling your kids is not on the menu either, no matter how crazy they make you sometimes. Try getting them involved in after-school practices. 13) A BRIEF NOTE ON FREECYCLE ETIQUETTE: "Be nice." We've got a great little community here so when you arrange to pick up an item from another Freecycle Member, it is basic good manners to accommodate them as much as possible in terms of scheduling, and then be punctual; they are, after all, giving you something you need and asking nothing in return except that you will show up when you say you will. (Leaving someone hanging is never a nice thing.) Also, unless the giver tells you otherwise, assume that they would like you to come by as soon as you can to take away the item; no more than three days after the offer is made is usual. (Think of it as The Three-Day Rule.) You may leave feedback in out "database" at the website for both positive and negative transactions.
