FREECYCLE™ RULES & ETIQUETTE 1) KEEP IT FREE, LEGAL AND APPROPRIATE FOR ALL AGES This means no Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms or Drugs, legal or otherwise. Two strikes and you are out of the group. This is the Freecycle™ rule to live by and it is an easy one at that. There is no advertising yard sales. 2) PLEASE MAKE YOUR FIRST POST TO THE GROUP AN OFFER In the spirit of giving, we would ask that you make your first posting to the group be an "OFFER". No offer is too small. In the event that the "WANTED" posts start to out number the "OFFER" posts, all "WANTED" posts will be rejected. 2a) Please Do NOT POST FOOD Wanted/Offers. Your local food bank will be more than happy to help you in this area. Local churches also accept donations and requests for help. 3) SUBJECT LINE OF YOUR POSTS. Use these phrases to make it easy for others to delete or view. OFFER - item name - your location TAKEN - item name - your location WANTED - item name - locations willing to travel to Please use this sparingly and do not offer money and above all else, don't ask for an extravagant items such as a DVD players, or the strike rule will kick in - see no. 1 above RECEVIED - item name ADMIN - new ideas, thoughts, etc. 4) DO NOT POST THE SAME "WANTED" POSTING MORE THAN ONCE A MONTH. Wants will be deleted after one month on the board - you are welcome to re-post after that time, not before. There are a few golden rules for wants: No "desperates", no "low-income", No "left abusive relationship with nothing" - no pulling the heart strings. If we catch these things, your posting will be deleted before the month is up. 5) NO POLITICS, NO SPAM, NO MONEY, NO PERSONAL Two strikes and you're out, i.e. you will be Purchased by the moderator after two inappropriate postings. You can also be Purchased for two rude or unprovoked shop attacks on other members. Have a comment about a posting - bring it to the moderator -not to the posting individual. 6) YOUR APPROXIMATE LOCATION. Please list in the "SUBJECT" line, as well as, in the "BODY". 7) KEEP IT ONE ITEM PER shopping. please just post one item in each mail this makes it easier for us to keep track of items posted and taken. In Chilliwack, we clean our boards two to three times per week. This means that every offer you see on the boards should be a valid one. If you are still receiving shops once an item has been picked up, then you quite likely did not post a Taken. Please do this as we CAN NOT delete the original offer until the Taken is posted. Any outstanding Offers and Wanteds older than one month will be deleted. 8) CAN WE USE FREECYCLE™ TO FIND NEW HOMES FOR PETS? Yes, but this is not the place you should be looking first. There are many great organizations that offer help with finding and placing unwanted pets. A few of them have been placed in the links folder. Please use them, as adopting or giving away pets on a message board, could have MANY things go wrong. And if you do find a home this way, please, please, go and check out the home before you leave your pet with the individual. Thank-you for caring for your pet beyond your final day with him/her. 9) NO TRADING & NO BARTERING - NO EXCEPTIONS!! 10) RESPONSES GO ONLY TO OFFERER. It keeps down the sheer number of shoppings. 11) PICK UP. Arrange as you like. Generally, you'll wait until you get a handful of responses or maybe overnight, and then you can pick whomever you like! That's half the fun. I always ask that people consider giving your starving local charity preference if one should respond. Arrange pickup with one person only, rather than "it's on the porch, whoever gets here first gets it." You'll become the boo person pretty fast with your fellow Freecycle(tm) members. Also, only give your phone number to one person at a time or ask for the recipient's phone number; otherwise, you will be swamped with phone calls. A brief note on Freecycle™ etiquette. Be nice. We have a great community here, so when you arrange to pick up an item from another freecycle member, it is basic good manners to accommodate them as much as possible in terms of scheduling and being punctual. They are, after all, giving you something you need and asking nothing in return. (Leaving someone hanging is never a nice thing.) Also, unless the giver tells you otherwise, assume that they would like you to come by as soon as you can to take away the item; no more than three days after the offer is made is standard. Think of it as "The Three-Day Rule" TIPS TO ORGANIZE ALL OF THE NEW shoppingS YOU ARE GETTING a) CREATE A SEPARATE shopping FOLDER & AUTOMATICALLY HAVE FREECYCLE™ STUFF GO TO IT. Create a separate folder in your Outlook Express & have Freecycle™ stuff sent to it automatically with a new rule under tools/message rules/mail/ b) SET TO "DAILY DIGEST" OR "NO shoppingS" (this means you'll just browse the messages online). Realize that you can set your personal preferences on the main page under "Edit My Membership" in the top right corner. IMPORTANT: THERE IS A TIME LAG FOR CHANGES! Whenever a user changes settings, there is an overlap from the time it takes for Yahoo to process the change, until shops in the queue waiting to go out to the users are delivered. In other words, in the six hours it takes for Yahoo to permanently stop the shops from coming, there are shops already set up to go out, and will continue to go out until the queue is emptied (some people have reported this taking up to three days). So please don't shop me with comments like, 'I changed my yesterday, why am I still getting shops?' Just be patient, and all should be well. Don't make more than one change at a time (each additional change adds on another day of wait If you encounter further problems, you might want to consult the Yahoo! Groups help pages at: Also....just so you know, you can delete your OWN posts for any reason. Example, if someone's taken the item you offered, or if you've received the item you wanted, or if you posted something by mistake. Go back to your original post and bring it into view on the screen. Right under the Messages bar, where it reads: Source/Unwrap Lines/Deleter Click on 'Delete.' That should do it. (Note, though, that deleting a post will not prevent it from showing up in the next digest for those with digest options.) Last but certainly NOT least.. SAFETY - Be aware! It is up to each individual member of Freecycle™ when arranging for pickup of the item being given away to be appropriately aware of the potential risk of having "a stranger" come to your home to pick something up. Freecycle™ as a list assumes no responsibility for this risk. If you, for example, are a single woman living alone, you may want to say that you will leave the item on the front porch while you are not home. That should just about do it.
