"The smartest move that material handling and related companies can make is to adopt a dual strategy," says Tompkins. "Now, it is all about 'globalization' instead of Associates designs and integrates global end-to-end supply chain solutions. Companies should develop operations in China that export back to the U.S. as well as sell to customers within China, says Tompkins. "Integrate sourcing from China with product sales in China and make Asia part of your overall global supply chain and customer base," he adds. This dual strategy also recognizes the growing middle class in China, currently estimated at 100 million. Opportunities for sales and distribution will expand as the middle class continues to grow. Western companies require "competitive intelligence" in their Asian business strategies in order to be successful, however. "It is a mistake to assume that what works in the U.S. States or Europe will work in China," says Ganster. "People, thought processes, how technology is viewed, and even the different terrain must be considered when establishing China as part of the global supply chain." Ganster also points out that China's material handling industry has grown aggressively due to continued construction and industrial expansion. "Material handling equipment sales have increased 25-30% a year over the last four years," he notes. "And the opening of China's logistics market will provide a huge opportunity for suppliers to the warehouse industry." On the other hand, the country's level of technology (including WMS) is still in the embryonic stage, with only about 5% of warehouses in China reporting that they have sufficient IT systems. "Many Chinese companies are writing their own WMS programs that are not built to international standards, and this will only add to their difficulties in globalizing," Ganster says. *** New Robotic Welding System Offers More Control *** Compiled By Adrienne Selko ABB Robotics, a robotics manufacturer, and ESAB, a provider of welding and cutting technology, have joined forces to create a robotic welding system that offers better control over the welding process. ABB's robotic technology is combined with ESAB's new Aristo Mig 5000i power source. The new technology, which features an integrated interface for robotic MIG welding of materials used in the metal fabrication industry, was designed specifically for ABB's welding robots. ABB's weling system reduces cycle time by as much as 15% and cuts unplanned downtime by up to 75%, according to a company statement. The system supports a number of welding applications, including robotic short arc, spray arc, pulsed arc and rapid arc, or high-speed welding, and includes ESAB's SuperPulse technology, which offers better control over the welding process. The new welding system offers several benefits to users, including: * Exceptional digital communication -- impeccable communication between the power source and robot controller offers excellent welding properties with minimal spatter, even at high welding speeds. * Single interface -- the robot and power source are controlled with a single interface, which speeds up setup time and reduces human error. * Easy programming with 300 pre-programmed synergic lines -- selection of the desired wire-feeding speed allows the power source to automatically select the appropriate voltage, allowing the operator to program custom synergic lines. *** Eurozone Industrial Orders Stronger than Expected *** By Agence France-Presse Factories in the 15 nations sharing the euro saw demand grow slightly faster than expected in February, official EU data showed on April 23. New industrial orders in the eurozone surged by 0.6% in February from January and jumped 9.9% over the same month in 2007, the European Union's Eurostat data agency said. The result exceeded economists' forecasts for orders to rise 0.4% over one month and increase 6.9% from January 2007. The firm February growth came despite the euro's record run on currency markets, which makes the eurozone more expensive on international markets, hurting the bloc's exports. February's strength was underpinned by growing demand for electronics, chemicals and textile products while notioriously volatile orders for transport equipment slipped along with orders for machinery. Meanwhile, in the 27-nation EU new industrial orders remained unchanged in February and rose 9.2% over one year. The euro changed hands at 1.5956 dollars against US$1.5988 late on April 22, at 164.62 yen (164.63), 0.8003 pounds (0.8010) and 1.6081 Swiss francs (1.6045). The dollar stood at 103.20 yen (102.98) and 1.0077 Swiss francs (1.0033). The pound was at 1.9939 dollars (1.9954). ***Sales & Earnings*** Boeing Profits Fly Ahead of Forecasts: (AFP) Boeing said April 23 its first-quarter profit rose 38% from a year ago to $1.2 billion as commercial airplanes and defense operations helped the bottom line. Boeing's quarterly revenue rose four percent to $16.0 billion. "We are methodically working through our challenges, including the start-up of the 787, and our people remain focused on satisfying our customers and leveraging growth and productivity into better bottom-line and top-line performance for our company,"said chairman, president and chief executive Jim McNerney. Boeing's order backlog at quarter-end reached a record $346 billion, up 32% in the last year, with growth in the quarter driven by commercial airplane and the V-22 for the U.S. armed forces. ***Sales & Earnings*** Sony Ericsson Sees Profits Plunge: (AFP) Sony Ericsson said on April 23 its profits plunged in the first quarter as its average selling price dropped due to its reorientation towards low and mid-end phones. In the first three months of the year, the group registered a net profit of 133 million euros (US$212 million), down by 47.6% from 254 million euros a year earlier. Sales dipped by 7.6% in terms of value to 2.7 billion euros during the period. Sony Ericsson, the world's fourth-biggest mobile phone manufacturer, sold 22.3 handsets during the period at an average selling price of 121 euros, compared to 21.8 million at 134 euros last year. The drop in sales, which was expected after the group issued a profit warning in March, was attributed to shrinking demand for mid- and high-end mobile phones on the company's main market, Europe, amid an economic slump. In the first quarter, the group also suffered from a shortage of parts for the company's much in demand mid-end phones. Sony Ericsson said however that it expected a recovery in the second half of the year. Sources: IndustryWeek staff, Agence France-Presse Copyright Agence France-Presse, 2008.
