Summary of Editorials from the Hebrew Press 17 April 2008

MFA Article Summary of Editorials from the Hebrew Press (Israel Government Press Office) Two papers comment on yesterday's clash with terrorists in the Gaza Strip, in which three IDF soldiers were killed: Yediot Aharonot remarks that "The IDF excels at having a short memory," and adds that "It is repeating, in Gaza, the same mistakes it made in Lebanon." The editors believe that "The army's starting point must be that the enemy knows its responses and patterns of activity like the back of its hand," and call for the IDF to make far better use of its overwhelming technological advantage. Ma'ariv says that Hamas "is investing efforts, initiative and - regrettably - creativity, in a format similar to Hezbollah's," in "the war of the fences." The editors aver that Hamas is learning from the IDF's modus operandi and adapting its tactics accordingly. The paper also suggests that Hamas is willing to accept a high number of casualties in order to cause Israeli losses since "Hamas understands the limits of Israel's power." The editors are also concerned that "Hamas has succeeded in maintaining its administrative ability," and that "Even during days of fighting, the organization's leadership continues to function normally." Rishon-Hatzofeh believes that "Kadima, as a party, is entirely corrupt," and declares that this undermines everything the Government does, including the peace process. Haaretz states that when it comes to Israel's ties with the Arab world, where progress is measured in millimeters, any official symbolic gesture made by an Arab country to Israel should not be belittled, even if it seems a marginal anecdote. FM Livni's recent visit to the region has established a broader and more overt bridge with these countries, and there is now a greater possibility of deep, sincere and serious dialogue. The Jerusalem Post opines that this week's dramatic elections in Italy promise to redraw that country's political map and to change its relations with Israel - both to auspicious effect. [Alex Fishman and Amit Cohen wrote today's articles in Yediot Aharonot and Ma'ariv, respectively.] 17 April 2008 MFA Website Purchase online to MFA Articles Quick links * Haaretz * Yediot Aharonot * Maariv * Globes * Jerusalem Post * Hazofe Questions or comments? shopping us at Purchase from MFA Article MFA Article Summary of Editorials from the Hebrew Press (Israel Government Press Office) Two papers comment on yesterday's clash with terrorists in the Gaza Strip, in which three IDF soldiers were killed: Yediot Aharonot remarks that "The IDF excels at having a short memory," and adds that "It is repeating, in Gaza, the same mistakes it made in Lebanon."
