Some cruises embark or disembark in Rome, others dock for the day in Civitavecchia, which is about an hour from Rome. While in Rome, be sure to visit Vatican City and see the breath-taking St. Peter's and Vatican Museum. You probably won't see the Pope, but I predict you will think of Rome every time he's in the news! IN THE SPOTLIGHT Exploring the Heart of Rome Like most people, I love Rome. If you have one day in Rome, you'll need to choose between seeing the glory of ancient Rome on one side of the Tiber River or St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museum on the other side. If you have two days in Rome, you can squeeze in both if you move quickly. With three or more days you can expand the time you spend at each attraction, add another museum, or venture outside the city to the surrounding area. Touring the Vatican Museum The Vatican Museum near St. Peter's Cathedral is a highlight of any visit to Rome and Vatican City. The artwork, gathered from around the world, is magnificent. At the end of the tour, you come to the Sistine Chapel, which is especially impressive. Civitavecchia to Rome Transportation The Guide to Italy gives some tips on how to get into Rome from the cruise port of Civitavecchia.
