I like bronze, but it's not a low molt point metal, like aluminium. A lot of things can be plated, even plastic these days. The furnace you would need depends on the metal you are going to cast. Low volume, I wouldn't even bother with a spin caster, I'd just do the gravity pours, and have a larger feeder, or maybe even steam casting (haven't used steam yet, it still scares me). Are vulcanised rubber moulds better... in a word no, they're even par. Getting moulds made commercially is usually a service of the foundry, they charge you a set up fee, and keep your mould, this way it encourages repeat business.
